Poison Ivy Relief with a Simple Household Trick

By Seniors Like Us

As we age, many of us find more joy in spending time outdoors—gardening, walking, or simply relaxing in nature. But with that comes an age-old nuisance: poison ivy. If you've ever brushed up against this irritating plant, you know how miserable the itchy rash can be. Fortunately, there's a simple trick using items you probably already have at home.

The Poison Ivy Problem

Poison ivy contains an oily resin called urushiol. This oil is what causes the allergic reaction—itching, redness, swelling, and even blistering. The key to managing poison ivy is removing this oil from the skin as soon as possible. Soap and water can help if used immediately, but what if the rash has already started?

A Trick You Can Try

Here’s a clever home remedy that may help draw out the oils even after exposure:

What you'll need:

  • A strip of brown paper bag (yes, the kind from the grocery store)
  • Apple cider vinegar

What to do:

  1. Cut a strip from a clean brown paper bag.
  2. Soak the strip in apple cider vinegar until it’s thoroughly saturated.
  3. Gently apply the soaked strip directly to the affected area.
  4. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.

This combination is believed to help lift the urushiol oil out of the skin, potentially reducing itching and speeding up healing. Apple cider vinegar has natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, and the porous paper helps pull the irritant out.

A Note of Caution

This trick is a home remedy passed down through generations. While many people report relief, it may not work for everyone. If the rash is severe, spreading rapidly, or near sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth, be sure to consult a healthcare provider.

Prevention is Best

  • Wear gloves and long sleeves when working in the yard.
